I found a really interesting article about how today’s youth aren’t encourage to build things any more. Â I’m not sure if it’s out of a sense of fear of injury or not wanting the kid to experience failure (goodness knows success is rare enough) or what the deal is. The article’s author talks a bit about how hand tools are being replaced with stuff like 3D printers (which are awesome) and laser cutters (similarly awesome) but the problem is that the tools are so expensive and fragile that they’re not being used for fear of breaking them. Â She talks about getting her first tool kit when she was about eight and I had fond memories of my little tool box with its hammer and so forth. Â I hope I let my kids play with tools when they are old enough.
