Here is a dog – A Charm of Magpies – Also the Grammys

I have a new desktop background that came via the blog of a friend of a friend who does drawings.

Here is a dog – A Charm of Magpies.

I watched the Grammys last night at Caley’s house with the majority of the 20’s/30’s crew.  Coldplay and Radiohead were highlights (though it was really just Johnny and Thom and a marching band).  Lowlights included virtually the entire rest of the show, particularly M.I.A. wearing some sort of polkadotted see-through thing (which was made even worse by the fact that yesterday was her due date so she was ultra-pregnant) and I will not even start about the Katy Perry debacle.  It was pretty dumb/gross/wrong/pop music.  Well done to Robert Plant for picking up album of the year, though.  I shall try to give some of his new stuff a listen.

Out of sheer laziness this week, I grew a beard. Most of a beard, anyway. It’s not very long or noticeable. It’s more of a “well, I didn’t shave for 4 straight days and now it would take too long to shave properly so I might as well just tell people it’s a beard.” Slightly more than ‘dirty face,’ nothing like ‘ZZ Top.’

This morning it got to be terribly itchy (which is the point I usually stop growing it) so I decided to shave. But not all at once. I am now the proud (?) bearer of some mean muttonchops. I look like Lemmy from Motorhead or a relatively clean Wolverine. It’s actually super-gross and I don’t think I’ll be able to stand it much longer. I basically shaved an anti-goatee. It has these sort of pointy bits at the bottom and is basically the second or third least attractive facial hair I have ever had. The least attractive was probably the handlebar moustache I sported for about ten minutes while shaving off the last full beard while the second least was the plain moustache I had right after said handlebar. I’m probably going back to cleanshaven sometime this evening and certainly before going to church tomorrow.

The things that I wonder pt. 2

Which is cheaper?   A couple hours of post-production time and an auto-tuning program or 10 hours of studio time and actually being able to sing?

Over the weekend we watched some movie or other with one of today’s pop sensations (Miley Cyrus or some similar ilk).  This movie was about a bunch of kids at some kind of musical school.  It fell victim to a whole lot of stuff that makes me not watch movies (high school as a sort of junior university, really unrealistically good-looking people, bizarrely white/blonde hair, I could go on).  As a result of this being set in a musical high school, the big final number was this coming-of-age, I’ve finally overcome my stage fright sort of production.  It was a girl singing with her boyfriend accompanying on piano or guitar and a backing band.

I could hear the auto-tuner.  Not in the Cher “Believe” I-am-using-this-as-an-effect-in-the-song sort of way but in a “hey, we cast somebody who cannot sing worth beans” sort of way.  I wasn’t really enjoying the movie up to that point, but that put me right over the edge.

How is it that people like Ms. Cyrus, who cannot act or sing, manage to get work that involves both acting and singing?
